I just planted my first garden and didn’t have room to use the entire seed packet. Should I save them and use them again next year? Will they still be good? The package says the sell by date is the end of this year so it seems like they would still be good. Yes, they can harm your plants. Mostly, they’ll just make the leaves look eaten and ratty, but will not kill the plants outright. You can knock them off your plants into a pan of soapy water. You can also spray the plants with insecticidal soap they like with Neem oil in it. It will not kill them, but they do not seem to like it, and wants to move on rather than stay and feed on plants that are sprayed. You could also place bait bags far from your desired plants. Though there is some discussion Whether those do not actually attract even more beetles into your yard than would be there anyway.

When I had an organic garden, I would add to the soil composted kelp, Which Seemed to discourage any number of pests. Japanese garden bean beetles would take one bite of my beans, and then fly away to eat my neighbors. : O)
