So lately I’ve been hearing more and more about growing your own vegetables. This got me thinking, just how much space do you need to supply all your produce needs? Granted, I realize that the point of the whole movement is that any little bit helps, and that you’re kind of restricted based on your climate. Still, I’m sure someone can give me a rough number.

It is possible to grow produce for a family of four on 1 / 4 acre. I recommend checking out The Backyard Homesteader from your library.

The answer to your questions depends on what produce you like to eat, how much of it you want to eat you and the size of your family. 1 / 4 of an acre is slightly more than 10.000 square feet. You can grow a bunch of vegetables on a quarter of an acre. If you only planning to eat produce that comes from your garden all year long, you need about 4000 square feet per person. This would at least give you enough room to grow the following: 100 quarts of green beans, watermelons 15-10, 25 Canteloupe, 20 quarts of tomato sauce, 50 pounds of potatoes, 50 pounds of onions, 15 quarts of peppers, 10 quarts of peas, 100 ears of corn, plus some summer squash, pumpkins, lettuce, turnips, winter squash and strawberries. The following link has lots of good info about planting, watering, fertilizing, harvesting and storing many of these vegetables, along with garden planning tips and space requirements for each vegetable. Good luck!

I agree with about a quarter of an acre. my grandma has a half acre garden and she feeds about eight people with plenty left over. Plant your garden in rows about two and a half feet.
